Text and Dine: How Texting Can Improve the Restaurant Industry
We often think of going out to eat as an almost sacred ritual, free from the distracting reach of our mobile devices: an occasion about enjoying food and the company of friends and family face-to-face. While these values still hold, texting seems to be gaining more and more of a role in dining out, especially for the restaurants themselves. SMS is beginning to take root as a way to facilitate the workings of restaurants in a myriad of exciting new ways.

While SMS certainly won't replace a skilled waitstaff, it can lend them a hand in lunch or dinner rushes at a busy venue.

How Can Text Messaging Change the Hospitality Industry?
While waiting at the airport for your rental car, you get a notification on your cell phone. It's a text from your hotel, asking if you would like a drink or food from room service upon your arrival. It may sound like a futuristic luxury, but the fact of the matter is that scenarios like this are not that far off. Text messaging offers a myriad of ways to boost the hospitality industry, and hotels are bound to take note sooner rather than later.

SMS is an ideal platform for the hospitality industry. A large reason why is its speed; texting allows a guest to issue a request or ask a question very quickly, and can relay the information to hotel staff instantly.

Could Texting Save Clinical Trial Recruitment?
Getting a drug on the market is no easy feat; an enormous amount of research, development, and trials are only quantitative markers of the process a new medication must undergo before gaining the clear for distribution by healthcare professionals. One would hope that, at the least, a research team that has advanced a drug to clinical trials wouldn't have to fret over putting together the trial, but a common difficulty in gathering participants for clinical trials has made this far from the reality for many medical researchers. However, texting may offer a solution.

At first glance, it may not make much sense that rounding up participants for research trials would present such an obstacle.

The Command Line / ASCII - Text API is one of several ways that PageGate can accept incoming messages:
The Command Line ASCII Text API is capable of monitoring a directory or a series of directories on the local hard drive or across the network, for an ASCII/text file output. The interface also provides a command line interface (executable) for other applications to use. The messages can then be formatted or directed to mobile phones or wireless devices.

The Text API allows many 'off the shelf' and custom applications, such as network monitoring applications, computer aided dispatch applications, building control software and many others, to deliver messages when specified events occur or thresholds are met.

For Diabetics, Texting Program Improves Health
When living with diabetes, diligent self-care is essential, and at times overwhelming. The demands of self-awareness and self-care can be exhausting, or simply easy to forget about at times, but a lapse can be dangerous for diabetics. In an effort to make keeping on top of the daily responsibilities of diabetes easier, researchers have begun to explore how texting might be used to lighten this load and improve the health of diabetics.

Researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine have launched a program called CareSmarts that aims to help those living with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes keep on top of their daily responsibilities to stay healthy. CareSmarts relies on texting to do this, as it is an instant, convenient, and widely popular medium of communication that is gaining even more footing across age groups.

How Mobile Technology Is Fighting the Spread of Disease
Mobile technology is not new to health developments--cell phones have been put to task in an impressive range of technologies to improve public health. An important and relevant instance of this approach is the use of texting to address disease epidemics. This happens in a great variety of ways, including using SMS and related mobile technology to track diseases, and to encourage patients and doctors to take protective measures against rapidly spreading diseases.

A powerful example is Alerta DISAMAR, a project under the United Nations-Vodafone Foundation that uses text messaging to track the spread of infectious diseases as well as to create a valuable store of information for epidemiologists.

Web API - Web Server and CGI Interface - GetWeb
Send text messages via webpages. The PageGate Web API allows clients to dispatch messages from a webpage on their webserver. PageGate's web interface supports many types of web pages including single, group, multi-page, drop down lists and ad-hoc type web pages. The web pages can be set up using templates.

The Web Interface uses a CGI script to allow any Windows based web server to accept information entered on a web page and send it to PageGate. PageGate then sends the message out via text message.

Web Developers can use the Web Server Interface to send messages to PageGate from their webpages (HTML, ASP, JavaScript, Java, etc.).

The CGI can be used with either a POST or GET method.

The POST method can be used by creating a form on your webpage. Information submitted in the form can be sent out as a text message.

The GET method is more popular with scripting languages such as JavaScript and Java.  It allows the CGI to be called with a command similar to one that could be entered into a browser's URL field.

The Web interface can also be used to enable PageGate to receive notifications from applications running on different platforms.
